Tonsillectomy

The best treatment for a sore throat depends upon the cause of the sore throat. Most of the time, you can use a home remedy like gargling with warm salty water to obtain relief. The tonsils are two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat. The adenoids are a mass of lymphoid tissue located behind the nasal passages. The tonsils and adenoids are removed to open the patient's airway while reducing the patient's tendency for chronic sore throat and throat infections.

What is a Cobalation Tonsillectomy?

Jacksonville ENT Surgery offers a coblation tonsillectomy to our patients. Patients report a better overall experience with coblation-assisted tonsillectomy after surgery compared to traditional procedures such as electrocautery and cold knife. Coblation-assisted tonsillectomy is the gentle alternative, offering a rapid recovery and minimal pain. With a cobalation tonsillectomy, most patients resume a normal diet and activities within a few days.

Because of tissue damage caused by traditional tonsillectomy procedures, patients often take up to two weeks to return to a normal diet and resume normal activities. Studies show that patient calls and visits to the doctor due to complications after surgery are significantly less with coblation tonsillectomy. The only throat surgery most of us will ever experience is a tonsillectomy and/or an adenoidectomy.

Pediatric Tonsillitis & Adenoidectomy

Sometimes hearing loss, ear pain, or chronic ear infections are directly impacted by recurring tonsillitis or a patient's adenoids. The tonsils and adenoids are removed to open the patient’s airway while reducing the patient’s tendency for chronic sore throat and throat infections. In most cases, a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are performed by our ENT surgeon while the individual is still a pediatric patient but adult ENT patients that struggle with complications from infected tonsils or swollen adenoid tissue may have to undergo corrective ENT surgery. The hearing loss in many patients will be reversed after a tonsillectomy. Many of the nagging ear and throat infections should also disappear after ENT surgery.
